I am seeing a huge drop off in OBS development both with the program AND plugins, so I asked around a bit, and well the news appears to be not good….
Most people said that well streaming was taking a big hit for many with a lot less viewers and interaction, especially over on youtube. Game streamers said they were still seeing good numbers watching, but that interaction was dropping agaon especially on youtube. Twitch was still OK for many but there was just a thought that streaming had already peaked and was on a downward trajectory now as the cost of living crisis is biting a lot of things hard. I have seen budgets and spend drop dramatically this year here in the UK and elsewhere and things like streaming have really suffered as a result. I was hoping that this was a blip but I’m afraid I’m now thinking that this is a full on downturn. Like social media which has seen a huge drop-off livestreaming seems to have taken a similar turn for the worse. I honestly think this is related as it is a whole lot harder to see the events/streams that people are interested in nowadays, and this has been a rapid issue.
It is these reasons why I think there has been an associated drop in OBS development and the plugins it relies on. I also think it is criminal that a program like OBS has no plugin manager system in 2024 as plugins are vital to make full use of OBS. StreamUP has got a system but that doesn’t replace an integrated system at all. OBS is no longer the best streaming program for me in many ways with Prism Live being more stable with the same plugins and PolyPop bringing some really great features. This has not helped OBS either – though it is still by far and away the most used solution. I hope we can see some much needed innovation on the platforms too with Twitch still being stuck a decade out of date on 4k support and more codecs being supported. Youtube has promised SRT support for ages too and they are dragging their heels with that and this is just another symptom of something that is no longer moving forward but treading water at best – I hope this isn’t true but I suspect it is. Having a fair few platforms fail in 2024 due to lack of funding/funds is worrying too. I hope the rest of 2024 sees some improvements and perhaps a reset but I’m really not sure…
