Prism Live Studio Review!

This review has been on the cards for a few months now but I was awaiting a few updates which have now been delivered so here it is. Prism Live Studio is a livestreaming and recording tool which is based on OBS (technically it is a fork) but is a much better bet if you don’t need all the bells, whistles and technicalities of OBS. I have also found Prism to be far more stable than OBS and also a lot easier (for some reason) to get to work especially on older systems. If you are not a power user, and if you want stability, Prism seems a much better bet. It can still use OBS plugins but out of the box it supports multistreaming for instance, and the interface is quite a bit easier to understand. It also has a virtual camera and there is a decent mobile app as well if you need it which can, of course, make use of the much better cameras available in phones than most webcams. For these reasons alone, I would recommend taking a look at Prism, the less crashes (it has NEVER crashed on me yet in 3 years) for me is a huge reason to consider it!

As you can see the interface is clean and easy to understand, and the defaults, well they are way better than OBS, in my opinion. Prism also launches way faster than most OBS installations and picks up plugins pretty easily too. It does however suffer from that perennial problem of not having a plugin manager, which in my book is something OBS should address as a matter of urgency. Plugins are 100% necessary to get the best out of both of these programs and a plugin manager would make life way, way easier all around!

All the features you want and need are available, tweaks are great, and an added bonus is that Prism seems to use less resources than OBS on the same system – this is excellent if you have say an older laptop to stream from! Livestreaming isn’t particularly system friendly, and you can do way more if you have a fast system, especially on the graphics side, This review is NOT a deep dive, there are plenty of those out there, but if you want to start streaming and find OBS way too deep then here is your answer. I used this on Windows, and as per usual, your mileage might vary, but this program is recommended if you are a streamer, you might even find it suits you more than OBS

The mobile app is also very good – you can use an avatar or vtuber if you don’t want video of yourself, you can switch cameras etc. and there is an easy way to connect your mobile device to a Prism instance on a pc to use the camera and/or microphone. This is great and is very, very useful in many situations! Of course you could always send the camera feed from Prism to a livestreaming server and/or platform direct if you wish. For many this is a great entry into livestreaming rather than using say the big platforms apps!

Prism Live Studio

9 out of 10

Livestreaming app available on Mac, Windows and mobiles with great stability and lower resource needs than OBS. Still free so great value. recommended even if you like OBS just because of the greater stability

Stability

Never crashed on me unlike OBS. One of the most used phrases by me in the past is have you restarted OBS?
Ease of Use
8 out of 10
Easier to get around than OBS in my view and performs just as well.
Look & Feel
9 out of 10
Always a personal choice but I feel it looks and feels slightly better than OBS and seems to be snappier especially on older hardware. Mobile version really easy to use as well!
Price
10 out of 10
Well it is free, and support when I asked was failry decent all things considered. Not as many experts out there, but I believe it should be looked upon way more favourably than it is!

Pros

Easy to use

Great price (FREE)

Very stable and works well.

Cons

Whilst based on OBS it isn't OBS meaning not as much help out there!

Overlooked and people always seem to say just use OBS. Negative opinions don't help!

Despite performing better than OBS on systems it still needs a fairly decent system for best results.
