SampleScience VR-55 Review!

SampleScience have released a free plugin emulating the classic DR-55 drum machine as used by Depeche Mode. It emulates the 4 sounds of the DR-55 but they are replicated 3 times for some nice layering effects, and includes 6 effects as well. Can’t really moan at the price and well it sounds great!

Now whilst this is a free plugin, it is always appreciated that if you like and use this product to donate for its development which you can from the website linked above. Now unfortunately this plugin doesn’t have a sequencer aspect, a bit like the DMX plugin reviewed before, but that’s not too great an issue as any daw really can drive the sounds. Being able to layer those 4 sounds is also great and the fx add crunch and bite. There are a few options but all in all it is easy to understand and tweak and sounds exactly like you’d expect it too. Can’t go wrong for the price and you can get some old fashioned 80s beats easily enough. Check out the video above for an example of what it can do!

It is free – can't complain there!

Easy to use

Good price

Does exactly what it sets out to do

It does sound basic. You can add extra samples/instruments though if you wish!

No sequencer – though there are plenty of options to drive it
