GForce has teamed up with Sequential to release their Prophet-5 VST. There is no need to say any more about the Prophet-5 it is just one of those synths that everyone knows, especially as it is also a current synth in its Rev4 guise. I’m a little blasé about analogue synth recreations these days, and there are a multitude of Prophet a-like versions including Arturia and I was a little nervous to play around with this plugin. I am not going to sugar coat things, you can get a lot of these sounds from other plugins nowadays – there is no end of different plugins that will make sounds similar, so can it stand out?

You can see it can be busy, but it looks like the classic Prophet we all know. It has been massively expanded though with some FX added as well but yeah, it looks like it should so does it sound like it should? Well I think so – I mean I had rev2 back in the day, and it sounds a bit cleaner and less clangy than I remember it – but that’s not a bad thing. You can dial it up as well, and the added FX and features like the arp make it a far more versatile instrument. Does it stand out from the other Prophets though? Well I think it doesn’t sound way better, but different – but for me the biggest plus is the price (£99 but currently £69) plus the presets are actually pretty good. Wide range, over 460 of them and that helps sweeten the deal a lot. I wouldn’t say you need to buy this if you have the Arturia version though – they pretty much overlap, and that is my biggest issue with the same old classic synths being rehashed. Arturia recently did the MemoryMoog and that I find a bit meh, so much so I haven’t bothered to review it, but I have always been a Prophet fan so this one makes the cut. Check out the videos, I’ll link to a sounds video below and see if it makes sense for you.
GForce Prophet-5
GForce debuts its version of the classic Prophet-5. Decent but certainly not a must buy. The presets and price do make it more attractive than say the Arturia version though…
Pros
Sounds good – like a Prophet!
Good price
Presets are different compared to others and 460+ available
Cons
It is yet another analogue classic reimagined
Similar sounds can be found easily elsewhere
Can use a fair bit of cpu when a lot of FX added
